I wish I had some 2013 Topps Update cards to post but my Wal-Mart and Target shelves were empty last night. I'll probably try again this afternoon.
While we wait, please enjoy this Josh Kroeger certified autograph from the 2005 Fleer set.
Don't remember Josh Kroeger? That's okay. He only played in 22 games for the Diamondbacks back in 2004. Since then he bounced around to a few teams but never made it back to the big leagues. I don't see that he played anywhere in 2013 so he might have retired recently.
I picked up this card for less than $2 for our D-Backs autograph collection.
I was able to get a few autographs from current Diamondbacks players at the game I went to on Friday night too. The best was this one of Martin Prado. Martin signed his 2013 Topps card for me.
Brian from 30-Year Old Cardboard actually sent this card to us a few weeks ago. Thanks, Brian! I didn't buy much Series 2 this year so I wouldn't have had this card otherwise. It goes straight into My D-Backs Autograph Collection.
After buying tickets to the D-Backs Social Media night for Friday, I won tickets to the Arizona Lottery Fan Appreciation Day Neon Party for that same night. Luckily the there wasn't any scheduling conflicts. The Social Media stuff was pregame and the party took place during.
The party was held in the Miller Light Diamond Club which is past the bleachers in right field. Daniel from It's Like Having My Own Card Shop was there too. It's always good to be able to catch up with him.
Our prize package included $20 in D-Bucks that could be spent at the Team Shop, two neon green D-Backs t-shirts, and a pair of Arizona Lottery sunglasses. Those were great but the highlight of the party was a meet and greet with D-Backs alumni, Doug Davis and Augie Ojeda.
Both players were great. Doug Davis signed his 2009 Topps Heritage card for us.
Former Diamondbacks infielder, Alex Cintron signed his card from the 2004 Playoff Prestige set for us at the Alumni Game this past weekend.
Alex played for the D-Backs for parts of five seasons from 2001-2005. While his primary position was shortstop, he also filled in at second and third base. In 439 games he hit .279 with 25 home runs and 152 RBIs.
On Saturday night I joined the sea of purple for Throwback Night at Chase Field. The main event was a post-game Alumni Game featuring some D-Backs greats.
I got down there early and was able to get a few autographs for our Diamondbacks collection. I also hung out with Daniel from It's Like Having My Own Card Shop again so that was great too.
First up is former D-Backs starting pitcher, Elmer Dessens. Elmer signed his 2004 Upper Deck Pepsi card for us. These were inserted into 12 or 24 packs of Pepsi cans.
Elmer started 39 games for Arizona over parts of two seasons. He won 9 games and struck out 168 batters.
Diamondbacks prospect, Matt Davidson made his MLB debut over the weekend. You may remember him from being named MVP of the 2013 Future's Game. Matt is currently listed at number two on Jonathan Mayo's list of top D-Backs prospects. We have high hopes that he'll be something special and hold down third base for a long time.
Matt signed his 2012 Topps Pro Debut card for us during Spring Training.
Not long ago Brandon Allen looked like a pretty promising prospect for the Diamondbacks. His time in Arizona ended after 65 games over three seasons. He was traded to Oakland in 2011 for Brad Ziegler. He is currently with the Padres organization and playing for Triple A Tucson.
Brandon signed his 2010 Topps Heritage card for us awhile back at the 2011 D-Backs Fan Fest.
Andy Benes had a long MLB career that started when he was drafted first overall by the Padres in 1988. He played on five teams including the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was our Opening Day starter for the first ever D-Backs game on 3/31/98. During his two years in Arizona he would win 27 games. Not bad for an expansion team.
Andy signed his 1999 Topps Stadium Club card for me from a TTM request earlier this year.
I only sent off a few TTM requests this Spring Training and got even fewer back.
Armando Galarraga came through and this signed 2011 Topps card showed up in our mailbox today.
Armando started 8 games for the Diamondbacks in 2011. His ERA was just a hair under 6 and he was sent down to Triple A Reno. He will always be best known for his near perfect game with the Tigers in 2010.
I only sent off a few TTM requests this Spring Training. Several of them have come back already.
Jake Elmore was a 34th round draft pick for the Diamondbacks in 2008. Prior to that he went to Arizona State. Go Devils!
Jake made his MLB debut on Saturday, August 11, 2012. It was also Gerardo Parra bobblehead night. I was at that game. Shortly afterward I purchased a few of his rookie cards with hope that I could get them signed during Spring Training. The D-Backs had other plans as they put him on waivers last November. The Astros swooped in and picked him up.
Jake quickly responded to my fan mail request and this awesome autographed card is now part of our Diamondbacks Collection.
One of the newest members of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Heath Bell signed a card for us at a Spring Training practice. Heath is currently in Miami with Team USA for the World Baseball Classic. They're playing Puerto Rico this afternoon in a loser goes home elimination game.
After a rough year with the Marlins in 2012, I'm sure Heath is happy to be back in the familiar NL West. Hopefully he can return to the All-Star form he showed from 2009-2011.
I missed out on getting Patrick Corbin to sign a card at the signing I went to last Friday. We were able to get Patrick to sign his 2012 Topps card at the Diamondbacks Fan Fest.
I like Patrick. He's one of the D-Backs many options for a fifth starter this year. Even if he doesn't make the team out of Spring Training, I wouldn't be surprised to see him throw quite a few innings with the big club before the year is over.
The next autograph ticket I bought for Diamondbacks Fan Fest was of starting pitcher, Trevor Cahill. I got Trevor's autograph last year but it was on an A's card. He has plenty of D-Backs cards to choose from now. I went with this 2012 Topps Gypsy Queen. After seeing the signed version, I stand by my choice. It looks great.
Last Friday, I headed over to a signing with a few Diamondbacks players. I met up with Dan from It's Like Having My Own Card Shop and Joe from Hello Victory!
I found out a few days in advance that Adam Eaton was going to be at this signing. I didn't have his new 2013 Topps card so I had to overpay for one on eBay. I'm glad I did.
It turns out that my 2013 Topps card was the first one that Adam had ever signed. Now that didn't last for long since Dan was in line right behind me and he had him sign one too. For that ten seconds or less I had the only 2013 Topps card in the world that was signed by Adam.
Last Friday, I headed over to a signing with a few Diamondbacks players. I met up with Dan from It's Like Having My Own Card Shop and Joe from Hello Victory!
Miguel Montero, Josh Collmenter, Adam Eaton, and David Hernandez were all scheduled to attend. For unknown reasons Montero was replaced by Patrick Corbin. I didn't bring any Corbin stuff with me so that was kind of disappointing. At least they had cool freebie photos available. I didn't scan those but you can see the ones Dan got here and what Joe got here.
I had a good time making some new friends and went home with a few signed cards.
First up is D-Backs long reliever, Josh Collmenter. Josh signed his 2012 Topps Heritage card for me. Collmenter seems like a really nice guy. He's rocking a pretty killer beard right now too. Check it out.
We were able to get Trevor Bauer's autograph back in Spring Training. Arguably being the D-Backs top prospect, he already had plenty of buzz around him.
The good news for us is that on the day we saw him, he signed autographs for everyone who asked. I had him sign his 2011 Bowman rookie card.
Since then Trevor made his MLB debut in June, struggled mightily over a few starts, and was sent back down to Triple A. He's still our top prospect but some have cooled off on him a bit. His name is even out there in trade rumors this off-season. Hopefully he comes into Spring Training next year and solidifies his spot in the D-Backs rotation. Maybe I'll even be able to get another autograph from him.
The stack of D-Backs that Dennis from Too Many Verlanders sent us back in August inspired me to send off a few TTM autograph requests.
I sent this 1998 UD Collector's Choice to Willie Blair c/o the Fort Wayne TinCaps before their season ended. It came back signed a few weeks later.
Willie was one of the Diamondbacks starting pitchers back in 1998, their inaugural year. He lost 15 games while he was with Arizona. He would go on to lose one more game that year for the Mets. He was acquired by New York at the trade deadline in exchange for Bernard Gilkey.
